Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Faculty Learning Community
The Office of Teaching and Learning facilitates a Faculty Learning Community dedicated to helping faculty to develop and implement Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research projects suitable for presentation or publication. Faculty members do not need an initial research idea to join the group, and modest compensation will be available for those who complete a SoTL project as part of the learning community.
SoTL Learning Community
Updated FLC meeting dates, resources and details can be found in the FLC portfolio site: http://portfolio.du.edu/sotl/
The goals of the SoTL FLC are to provide support and structure to faculty interested in becoming active SoTL scholars, to help faculty members advance specific SoTL projects, and to build a community of colleagues doing active SoTL research. Members of the learning community will engage in regular discussion about specific SoTL projects that they are developing. (Find out more about SoTL.)
The SoTL FLC will meet 2-4 times each quarter. Members who would like to receive stipends for their work should attend at least 2-3 sessions per quarter.
Each faculty member will be encouraged to identify a publication or presentation opportunity for sharing their project results.
Learning Community Stages
The learning community will progress through a series of project stages over the course of the academic year. However, we realize that many faculty projects will have their own timeline and schedule.
- Fall – During the Fall quarter, the learning community will explore issues such as; Recognizing and Identifying SoTL projects, Human Subjects Research/IRB protocols, and Research Designs. Members will be encouraged to identify a SoTL project to pursue during the year and be placed into smaller working groups with colleagues based on project themes.
- Late Fall – Learning Community members can join a local field trip to the US Air Force Academy’s annual SoTL Forum.
- Winter/Spring – Topics for exploration will include; SoTL Journals and Conferences, Action Research, Survey Design and Quantitative Data Analysis, Demystifying Qualitative Data Analysis, and Data Visualization.
- During the OTL’s Teaching and Learning Week, DU SoTL projects will be featured.
Faculty members who complete SoTL projects as part of the SoTL FLC will be eligible to receive modest stipends, and travel support to present their projects at teaching conferences. For stipend details, visit the SoTL Portfolio Site.
