Canvas released a new feature update called Smart Search. Smart Search leverages semantic algorithms and AI for users to search courses for specific content. For example, within the search bar you could ask it to look for “Week 7 Readings,” or “Midterm Essay Feedback,” for a speedy and accurate search.

Smart Search is now available automatically in Canvas courses for all users (Instructors, Students, TAs, etc.). Find “Smart Search” within your course navigation menu and simply use the search bar to start exploring your course content.

If you would like to turn this feature off in your individual course, go to course “Settings,” and select the “Navigation” tab at the top, find “Smart Search,” and select “disable.” After saving this page in your course settings, Smart Search would be removed from your course navigation menu.

What can I search for?

  • Content Pages: Any informational pages created within the course, such as your readings and instructional materials pages or your weekly overview pages.
  • Announcements: Important updates and messages posted by instructors in the “Announcement” tab.
  • Discussion Prompts: Topics and threads within course discussion boards.
  • Assignment Descriptions: Details and guidelines within course assignments.

This wide content scope helps users find the information they need quickly and efficiently.
