This article is designed to guide you step-by-step how to set up quizzes in your Canvas course. This will be especially helpful as DU is encouraging faculty to be PIVOT Ready by having course content online. You can also use this feature for your online exams, including final exams that are required to be online for the Fall 2020 Quarter. The following images were retrieved from the Canvas Community Guides for Instructors, which are another great resource when building your quizzes in Canvas.

Naming the Quiz Question,
Quiz questions are not automatically numbered for instructors. To add a custom name to your quiz question, enter the name in the question text field. Custom names can help you identify quiz questions more easily.
Regardless of the question name, students always see quiz questions in numerical order (i.e. Question 1, Question 2).
Note: You do not have to change the red-outlined box from Question. This is not where you will type the question you are asking students to answer. You can simply leave this box as is OR label them as Question1, Question 2, etc.
Select Question Type,
In the question type drop-down menu, you can create the following types of quiz questions (Note: the links will redirect you to the Canvas Community Guides for Instructors):
- Multiple Choice
- Multiple Answers
- Multiple Drop-down (can be used for Likert scale)
- Numerical Answer
- Formula (simple formula and single variable)
- File Upload
Set the Point Value for the Question,
To set the point value for the question, enter the points in the pts field.
Note: Quiz point values support up to two decimal places. Entering more than two decimal places will round the point value to the nearest hundredth.
Enter the question in the Content Editor,
Enter the possible answers,
To save your question, click the Update Question button
Viewing Questions –
To view questions you have updated in your quiz, click the Show Question Details checkbox. You can continue to update the quiz questions before saving/publishing the quiz.
Note: Question details are not available in quizzes with more than 25 questions.
Saving the Quiz –
Click the Save button to save your work and preview the quiz.
Note: You should not publish your quiz until it is your final product. If you are ready to publish your quiz and make it available to students, click the Save & Publish button.
After you have saved the Quiz, click the Preview (1) button to see what students will see when they take the quiz. If the preview shows the quiz the way you want it, click the Publish (2) button.
Note: Although you can make changes to the quiz after it is published, students who have already opened or completed the quiz will not see any of the changes, which may affect their grades.
